Summary

This project explores intergenerational relations in broadband societies. The relationships between social generations will be analysed by using survey data sets collected from Spain, Italy, France, Germany and the UK in 1996 and 2009, and from Finland in 2011. Relationships between family generations will be studied by using the Finnish Time Use Survey 2009-2010,collected by Statistics Finland, as well as family group interviews which will be collected from Finland, Italy and the UK. In terms of theory, the project aims to develop a theoretical idea of digital continuum. This is contrary to prior studies which have seen clear-cut divisions between digitally “native” and “immigrant” generations. The concept of intermediary (alternatively, proxy) persons will be applied to understand which generation, or a part of it, facilitates others’ participation in broadband societies.
