The regulation of the cellular functions is complicated and important process. One way how cells perform this task is converting of mechanical forces into biochemical. Filamins are one of the most important molecules which transmit the mechanical force induced biochemical signals in cells. Structurally filamins are large proteins that bind simultaneously to actin filaments and transmembrane receptors, such as integrins. Mutations in filamin genes can be either lethal or to lead brain, bone, heart and cardiovascular developmental disorders. The aim of this research, done in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at University of Jyväskylä, is to find out how the mutations in filamin genes effect on filamin’s structure and function. In addition, mechanical force induced changes in filamins structure and function will be investigated. Various structural biology and computational biophysics methods will be used.
