Summary

The accurate assessment and definition of sedentary behavior are necessary in the studies on the associations of sedentary behavior with different health outcomes and when creating sedentary behavior and physical activity surveillance systems in school-aged children. The time periods of muscle inactivity and activity can provide information about the hypothetically hazardous sedentary behavior at the muscular level. The purposes of the present program of research are to examine accelerometry-derived and muscle electromyography (EMG)-based estimates of sedentary behavior and physical activity 1) in different typical activity tasks and 2) during the daily lives of
school-aged children, 3) to develop a universal and accurate method for the intensity-based classification of sedentary time and physical activity level when using accelerometry, is compared with the results obtained using EMG of muscle inactivity and activity level. Furthermore, 4) in lines with different cultural contexts, to validate the physical activity questionnaire survey between Chinese and Finnish children. The main novelties are in evaluating sedentary pattern and physical activity spectrum and associations with muscle activities.
