Summary

This study focuses on clergymen’s wives and widows in the eastern parts of the early modern Swedish realm. I will compile a prosopographical database on clerical families and examine the agency of clergymen’s wives and widows, their position in the parish community, and their social and religious roles. The study is based primarily on court records, funeral sermons and published clergy and student registers. The study utilizes the methodological approaches of parish studies, the study of lived religion, the history of emotions and experiences, gender history, and family history.
