Summary
Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD), the current theory of strong interactions, is being tested more precisely than ever by the data from high-energy nuclear collisions emerging from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). At the LHC, the relevant degrees of freedom of nuclei are quarks and gluons (partons) and many processes can be understood by considering collision between two such elementary particles. The goals of this proposal are to establish a unified description of the distributions of partons inside the nuclei of all sizes (from proton to lead nucleus) and to investigate the non-linear limit in which a proper description requires consideration of collisions between more elementary particles. In addition, the topical questions of parton-to-hadron fragmentation and the role of global momentum conservation in the centrality determination in collisions involving heavy ions are to be investigated. The methods used range from analytic calculations to massive numerical simulations.
