Summary
The aim of the project is to deepen the understanding of international students’ mobility and their subsequent migration in Finland and Europe. The strength and innovation of this project lies in its research design and data which is firstly, grounded in the “glonacal” heuristic through the coupling of unique data on international student mobility and migration from Finland along with data from Eurostats. Secondly, the research design allows investigation into both substantive (policy) as well as theoretical issues in international student mobility and migration. In short, the data available in this project is unique and likely represents an unprecedented opportunity to investigate substantive as well as theoretical questions in international students’ mobility and their migration into a host country. The focus of this research project investigates the drivers and effects of international students’ mobility and migration within Europe and Finland. The research questions (6) are arranged into two groupings, investigations into substantive (4 questions) and theoretical (2 questions) issues. So far, there have not been studies in Finland that look at the economic impact of international students over a longitudinal period and there is now a clear need to study the subject on a longer term. This project directly aims to address this need and will contribute to a better understanding of international student mobility and migration not only in Finland, but also in Europe. In summary, this project provides a unique way to investigate an important and current issue while being grounded in state of the art theory and methods likely producing novel results which can improve not only educational and immigration policy, but also possibly the lives of international students in Finland and Finnish higher education.
