The aim of the project is to examine the factors explaining and predicting the gender differences in learning outcomes in reading, science and mathematics. In addition, differences in attitudes and motivation towards learning are studied. Moreover, we examine what kind of interventions and teaching practices assist improving learning motivation and attidutes, especially among boys. We also study the factors explaining the fact that gender gaps are not detected in all schools. Our large-scale data sets (PISA, TIMSS and Alkuportaat) makes it easy for us to find schools where gender gaps are small. Closer inspection of these school and comparison to other schools makes it possible to recognizing practices to reduce gender gaps.
