Summary
This project concentrates on exploring halogen bonding, which is recently established non-covalent interaction. It has similar properties than well-known hydrogen bonding interaction, like high directionality and strength. However, halogen bonding lacks fundamental studies to be utilized in the construction of complex molecular systems. In this project rarely studied cationic donor ion (I+) will be utilized to form halogen bonds with sulphur atom acceptor containing molecules. Only single interaction site systems have been reported, so far, and the aim is to obtain more complex systems with multiple interaction sites. The desired acceptor molecules with multiple interaction sites can form capsular complexes with encapsulated guest molecules inside. These host-guest complexes may show high importance in pharmaceutical and bio-mimicking systems, with potential applications in crystal engineering, chemical sensing, organocatalysis, transport and storage.
