Summary
Ecological psychology and in particular the work of Bronfenbrenner (1994) suggests that the relation between a human being (athlete) and his or her surroundings is of paramount importance in human development. Previous athlete transition and talent development literature has also indicated that there are a number of factors which influence the development of dual career athletes, including the environment which they are in, the leadership they encounter, and the team atmosphere. ECO-DC mission is to (1) develop a comprehensive understanding of the dual career (sport and education) development environments (DCDE) across Europe, and (2) provide guidelines for the development and optimization of DCDEs supporting talented and elite athletes’ in their pursuit of sporting and academic excellence.
