Summary

The project aims to develop and analyze the use of digital portfolios in Finnish early childhood education. A new kind of evaluation method, digital portfolios, is analyzed in the study as well as how the related pedagogical practices become part of the everyday life in early childhood education from the perspective of educators and children.

The research aims to build an operational model for the collaborative development of digital portfolios and the application of the operational model to various early childhood education communities. In addition, the study analyses the meaning of digital content in the use of portfolios, as well as the experiences of early childhood educators and children in the use of digital portfolios. It is also important to study how the child's digital portfolio higlights both the child's own and the national early childhood education plan (ECEC plan). Simultaneously, it is possible to follow the introduction of new ECEC plan pedagogy in early childhood education units.

The project continues the work that was done in Dig my digital portfolios (Diggaa mun digimatkaa) -project that was funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education (funding until 31 December 2017). In that project, a research-based pedagogical model of the digital portfolio was developed and tested. The cooperative project network was formed by University of Jyväskylä, the municipalities of Kirkkonummi, Kerava and Tuusula, University of Helsinki, Folkhälsan and PRO koulutus ja konsultointi Oy.

In this study, the cooperation with the municipalities will continue and the study will be carried out in their municipal early childhood education.
