Summary

In the research project, we study innovation work in Finnish media organizations. Our special interest lies in the use of enterprise social media (ESM) as tools for innovation work. Examples of these tools are Slack and Google Apps for Work. We study how innovation work is currently facilitated and supported in Finnish media organizations, what are the employees’ views on innovation work and ESM use, and how innovation work could be improved and better managed in media organizations. The project consists of case studies in two Finnish media organizations. Based on our findings we will produce a workbook, which will act as a guide on how to facilitate innovation work in day-to-day media business. Our research efforts will help develop new practices for innovation work in journalism and map the communication needs of journalists when it comes to technology-mediated innovation processes.
