Summary
In my doctoral thesis, I study medium-specific narrative strategies of comics – that is, narrative techniques possible only in the realm of the comics medium.
Whereas literature is made up of words and sentences and film of moving image and audio, the components of comics narrative are panel sequences, combinations of words and images, and pages which present multiple panels at once. These medial features of comics make possible a number of specific narrative techniques – frequently emphasizing the medial self-awareness of the comics narrative. In order to draw my conclusions, I discuss the influential works of the comics writer Alan Moore.
The research question of my article-based dissertation is: What kind of narrative techniques in comics can be described as medium-specific and how are they employed in the comics of Alan Moore?
