Summary
The heterogeneity in physiological responses to resistance exercise training is well documented, showing that some people appear to respond very well to regular exercise. In others, desired training responses are considerably lower. The reasons why resistance training responsiveness differs between individuals are not yet known. Besides, the repeatability of the individual resistance training responses in trial-to-trial design is not yet studied. Therefore, a holistic set of data will be collected in this randomized controlled trial with people participating in resistance exercise-training, detraining, and retraining intervention. We aim to identify and examine biological networks to elucidate physiological mechanisms explaining differences in training responsiveness. The results can be used to rationalize individually tailored training programs to improve physical fitness, health, and well-being.
