Tiivistelmä

Background
Positive mental health refers to a state of well-being, challenging the idea that it is simply the
opposite of mental ill-health. However, public health research on adolescents has up to now
mainly focused on risk factors and mental health problems rather than on aspects of positive
mental health. Hence, there is a lack of knowledge about the distribution and determinants of
positive mental health among adolescents.

Overall aim
The overall objective of this joint Nordic project is to analyze determinants of positive mental
health and well-being among young people in the Nordic countries 2017/18. As an initial step,
methodological evaluations of the measures of positive mental health will be performed. The
project includes three work packages (WP):
 WP 1: Positive mental health among adolescents in the Nordic countries: validation of
measures and differences across gender
 WP 2: Identification of mental well-being ‘profiles’
 WP 3: Determinants of positive mental health among adolescents in the Nordic countries

Study context
The proposed project will use Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) data from
Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Denmark, Finland, Norway have
participated since the first study in 1983/84, Sweden since 1985/86, and Iceland since
2005/06. This proposal is based on the 2017/18 data collection which included additional
measures of positive mental health and some of its determinants. The statistical methods to be
used include techniques such exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, latent class
analysis, regression analysis, and trend analysis.

Realization
The project will be formally located at Stockholm University but involves a Nordic team of
researchers, who will meet 3- times during the project period 2020-2021.

Significance
The present project will contribute to the methodological development of HBSC.
Furthermore, it will contribute with empirically grounded knowledge about the distribution of
positive mental health and its determinants.
