Tiivistelmä

The proposed project joins the rising stream of research on the nanoeconomics of industry evolution in the field of strategic management. The premise of this research stream is that in order to understand the industry-level outcomes in terms of technological change and industry structure, one must start from the level executives, entrepreneurs and inventors, and examine how their decisions are influenced by the institutional setting in which they operate. Hence, nano refers to the events that unfold below the micro level of analysis.

The aim of the project is to increase our understanding of industry evolution, which is currently mainly explained with the industry life-cycle theory. By going to the nano level and finding ways to link nano-level phenomena to firm-level outcomes and industry-level developments, it is possible to understand why some firms in an industry become very large and successful while many wither away, and how that process results in the emergence of nationally important industries. In addition to the academic importance of this topic, the findings will also have relevance to policymakers eager to remove barriers to growth and to increase employment.

To achieve these goals, we will undertake archival, econometric and theoretical research on the evolution of the pulp and paper, machine building, and chemicals industries in Finland for the last 200 years. Studying these interconnected industries in an extensive timeframe will allow us to shed light on the interplay of entrepreneurial decision-making, technological change and institutional developments.
