Summary
Photographer of the clouds. Photographer Matti Poutvaara as the illustrator of Finland
Matti Poutvaara is one of Finland's most famous and productive landscape photographers, whose active career ranged from the 1920s to the 1970s. Despite the long and significant career in the development of Finnish landscape photography, Poutvaara has hardly been dealt with in an earlier study. The ongoing project aims to correct this inconvenience and create a book that, in addition to Poutvaara, also looks at more generally 20th-century Finnish professional photography, camera club activities, aerial photography, publishing, and styles and aesthetic changes in the field of photography. In addition to publications, Poutvaara's image production is viewed through tens of thousands of photos and negatives stored in museums and archives. On a more general level, the book helps to perceive Finnish landscapes and to understand its connections to different landscape concepts and environmental values.
