Summary

Conventional ammonia synthesis through the Haber-Bosch process is a large environmental strain which demands the expenditure of 1-2 % of annually produced global energy and 60 % of annual global hydrogen. As it stands, ammonia production requires centralized infrastructure and global distribution channels owing to extreme operating conditions (temperatures of 400-500 °C and 150-250 bar pressure). A consequently large ecological footprint from Haber-Bosch operations necessitates major advances in the catalytic conversion of dinitrogen and a pivot to a system which can deliver scalable and site-independent ammonia synthesis. Inspired by chemical transformations in nature, this project studies the synthesis and characterization of new low-valent earth abundant transition metal complexes and their application in the catalytic reduction of dinitrogen. Research will be carried out at the University of Jyväskylä, with a secondment at Yale University, USA.
