Abstract
Care guidelines recommend the use of the biopsychosocial (BPS) framework in treating musculoskeletal conditions, but its implementation in clinical work is still incomplete. The aim of the dissertation research was to examine the meaning of the BPS approach in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions from the perspective of clients and physiotherapists. Two phenomenographic sub-studies of the dissertation focused on the conceptions of patients with low back pain and one on the perceptions of physiotherapists. The fourth sub-study was a systematic literature review and metasynthesis of physiotherapists' perceptions of learning BPS interventions. The results highlighted five expansive themes common to physiotherapists and patients: the difference of the new approach; understanding pain; patient-centered care; gaining confidence; and the need for support. The results can be used in the development both of physiotherapy for patients with musculoskeletal conditions and of physiotherapists' training.
