Abstract

This chapter outlines the historical development of Open Dialogue (OD) in Western Lapland, and discusses the initial steps to include families to introduce network meetings both in the hospital and community settings. It describes changes in the ways we understood psychosis, the development of training programmes and research projects and the importance of teamwork. The health care district area of Lansi-Pohja lies to the north of the Gulf of Bothnia and shares its western border with Sweden. One specific element of Western Lapland is the history of a high incidence of diagnoses of schizophrenia. Need-Adapted Treatment was developed by Professor Yrjo Alanen and his colleagues in Turku, with its roots stretching back to the 1960s. Tom Andersen, a Norwegian psychiatrist from Tromso, was an important influence on the development of OD from the 1980s.
