Abstract

Low-back pain (LBP) is a common symptom in the world population, and it has a major role in limiting a client’s physical performance. Physical exercise and biopsychosocial rehabilitation are recommended care in chronic LBP clients. Approach to working biopsychosocial rehabilitation and commitment to rehabilitation both need use of communication and interaction. This systematic review is aiming to give more information about the topic by studying how physiotherapists and LBP patients experience the actualise of interaction in the physiotherapy process. We proceed following Joanna Briggs Institute protocol for conducting the systematic review and metasynthesis. To examine the studies about the experiences of interaction in the physiotherapy process we conducted electronic full-text searches from CINAHL and Medline databases in November 2020. Seven of 78 identified studies fulfilled our criteria. Studies included in metasynthesis contained experiences from physiotherapists and clients about communication and interaction in the rehabilitation process. From 54 different findings we synthesized four main results. They were clientorientation, building the relationship in a physiotherapy process, different methods of communication in interaction and the challenges in an interaction. This systematic review concludes that the rehabilitation process for LBP clients should be client-centered. This benefits a trust between client and physiotherapist as well as client’s commitment to the physiotherapy process, while enabling a better outcome for the physiotherapy. In addition to verbal communication in physiotherapy process is to promote interaction by, for instance, showing empathy and utilizing body language senses. Identifying and becoming aware of the challenges of interaction can also promote the relationship in the physiotherapy process.
