Abstract
This article is based on a study that aims to support understanding and developing intercultural competence in the context of Physical Education Teacher Education. The aim is also to increase knowledge about the consideration of cultural diversity as part of physical education. The research was carried out in 2020–2021 in connection with two courses of the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, which focused on equity in physical education. The theoretical framework leans, among others, on critical multicultural education. Qualitative data were analyzed with an interpretive approach. The majority of students considered issues related to cultural diversity to be a topical and central part of their education. Prior to the courses, the focus for some students was on getting “tips” about different cultures, religions, and physical education for immigrant students. During the courses, the complexity of the phenomenon and the expansion of the professional responsibilities of the physical education teacher began to take shape. Relevant pedagogical approaches to the development of intercultural competence were discussions as well as practical activities. Dealing with emotions as part of learning was important. It is not possible to assess the depth and permanence of learning in this article. In any case, it is clear that strengthening the teaching of cultural diversity in the various courses of physical education teacher training and in teacher education more broadly is important.
