Abstract

The paper presents a description of an ongoing project, the purpose of whichis to study the factors that constitute quality in childrens' life in Nordic day care centers. An important reason for this co-operative project is the discussion about the special "Nordic care model" that arouses interest in other parts of Europe and in the USA. Themain aim of the project is to analyse the quality of children's every day lives in the daycare center in order to determine the characteristicsof care, upbringing and education to promote quality in children's lives. The project team, however, views quality not only as a practical or didactical, but also as a theoretical and methodological problem. What characterizes quality? How these characteristics can be studied? Does the day care center provide children a good life?
