Abstract
The Olympic Games are considered the world’s foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. We analyze the Olympic success host effect for ongoing Olympic Games but also 8 years backwards and 8 years forward. This paper also analyzes the macroeconomic factors to explain the successes in the Summer Olympic Games from 1960–2016. Similar to industrial production, sports success requires factor inputs to produce athletes that place on the podium. According to the results of this study, the experience as a Games organizer, the GDP and population are significant contributors to Olympic success. Being a host country is found to be a positive factor in explaining the number of medals, not just during the home Games but also in future competitions and the host effect is evident up to eight years before the Games. Additionally, the share of agricultural land, military expenses and life expectancy are positively related to success.
