Abstract
Legitimacy is among the key concepts in the study of international organizations such as the United Nations (UN). Legitimacy is closely linked to the idea of multilateralism and how committed states are to multilateralism and international cooperation. Much of the existing literature has concentrated on normative and empirical aspects of legitimacy. This article examines legitimacy of the UN by focusing especially to the UN General Assembly and its mandate, which is often left aside in the UN literature. The main interests is to analyze how efforts to reform the UN General Assembly are interlinked with the overall discussion on UN’s legitimacy.
