Tiivistelmä

The year 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of launching the first national women's football tournament in Finland. Since then, football has become the most popular team sport for women and girls with over 38,000 registered players by 2022. Their growing number reflects a change in society, women's position and sports culture as a whole. The organisation of women's football started with a clear handicap compared to men. The periods identified in this chapter in women's and girls’ football for the past five decades demonstrate how rapidly the gender inequalities have been reduced. Women's football has become more professionalised – just like men's football – although on a smaller scale. Professionalisation is also manifested as success. The national team has made its way to various international major tournaments. Finnish players have drawn interest within the global football system. The successful players of women's teams have served as positive role models for girls. Further, the Football Association of Finland has supported girls’ football through various projects. The role of women has simultaneously been strengthened at all levels and segments of football.
