Entrepreneurship scholars have long studied why some companies perform better than others, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The characteristics of entrepreneurs, such as their growth intention, have been found to have a positive effect on firm growth. However, the interplay between firm growth and other means of performance, in particular profitability, is uncertain. To resolve earlier conflicting views, we conduct a meta-analysis to examine the effect of entrepreneur’s growth intention on growth and profitability, as well as analyze the moderating role of type of industry and cultural conditions in countries where firms operate on the main relationship. Analyses of 54 independent samples indicated that entrepreneur’s growth intention has a positive significant effect on SME’s growth, while being insignificant for profitability. Results also show that the intention-performance relationship depends on industry’s innovation intensity and certain cultural characteristics. The findings have theoretical and managerial implications, based on which we develop recommendations for future research.
