Tiivistelmä
This chapter focuses on how multilingualism and multilingual discourse feature in second language research. It begins by an overview of the shifting research foci whereby the focus has changed from monolingually oriented language acquisition perspectives to socially oriented multilingual discourse perspectives which involve seeing languages as dynamic resources with fluid boundaries rather than as fixed and clear-cut systems. The overview is followed by a discussion of the key concepts adopted in multilingual discourse perspectives to second language research, such as code-switching, translanguaging, and plurilingual competence. Next, methodological approaches to explore the intersection between multilingual discourse and second language learning are introduced. The approaches range from quantitative studies with multilingualism as the backdrop against which individuals’ second language learning is examined, to qualitative studies seeking to reframe second language research by gearing attention towards multilingualism as a resource and the inherent diversity of languages, learners, and learning environments. These approaches are further illustrated by sample studies. The chapter concludes by discussing the research implications for second language learning, teaching and use, and by contemplating future research directions in the area.
