Abstract

This dissertation examines the construction of the identity of three Finnish populist parties: the Finnish Rural Party, the Finns Party, and the Blue Reform, and thus the evolution of Finnish populist identity spanning the period from 1959 to 2019. It explores how these parties have shaped their identity, its evolution over time, as well as the themes that characterize it and the elements of continuity and rupture that define it. The analysed themes include rurality, nationalism, political identity, and gender issues.
The primary data used includes the parties' official political programmes, supplemented by interviews with former MPs and partisan literature. Research methods include thematic analysis and critical discourse analysis, combined with a historical approach.
In this study, identity is considered as a logic of differentiation, and populism viewed as a dichotomy exploiting discourse as a medium. The focus is on the official discourse of Finnish populist parties. The results show that the populist identity of parties adapts to changes in the context in which they operate, and that the importance given to the elements that compose it evolves over decades, with nationalism now taking a prominent place.
This research provides a politico-historical analysis of the evolution of the Finnish Rural Party, the Perussuomalaiset, and the Blue Reform. It highlights the evolution of the identity of Finnish populist parties over the long term, illustrating the complexity of populism in Finland and its transformation over the decades. By providing a case study on populist parties, it enriches our understanding of this political phenomenon.
