Abstract
Music therapy permits non-verbal, emotional musical expression and interaction in a unique way. It thus offers a promising approach in the treatment of different psychiatric disorders such as depression. Recently, the beneficial effects of music have been studied by brain research methods as well, and music has been found to activate general emotional and reward mechanisms in the brain. Several reviews and meta-analyses on the effects of music therapy in different psychiatric groups have been published. Our recent randomized controlled study, conducted at the University of Jyväskylä in depression and anxiety patients, showed that active, individual music therapy together with standard care is more effective than standard care alone. Moreover, empirical evidence indicates that depression alters the subjective experience of the emotional quality of music. Taken together, these finding highlight the promise of music therapy in the assessment and treatment of depression.
