Abstract

We examine the attitudes of residents in the Helsinki metropolitan area and Tampere towards the principles of
organising nuclear waste management for potential SMR power plants. In a survey of residents, centralised nuclear
waste management was the most popular option. Introduction of SMR power plants in different parts of
Finland could lead to a situation where decentralised nuclear power production leads to a decentralised nuclear
waste management model. A public debate on the management of nuclear waste from SMR power plants is
therefore needed in Finland.
