Tiivistelmä

The acceptable and forbidden forms of expression are controlled and enforced culturally. It is possible to ascertain through Nordic literature as to what kinds of norms and ideals controlled the aristocratic widows’ expressions of sorrow in the 14th and 15th centuries. The central feature was a public and flashy expression of sorrow, but even this had its limitations. At the level of ideals, the sorrow was expected to be genuine. It was ritualized into the soul asses, after which the deceased moved to the background. Thus grieving was not allowed to become a long-term phenomenon, because then it would have threatened the functionality of the collective that the deceased left behind. The mentality that favored remarriage was influenced not only by the patriarchal pattern of thought but also the demographic structures of the society: Due to high mortality, it was probable even when entering the first marriage that one of the spouses would sooner or later become a widow.
