Abstract
Tianxia theory is one of the most prominent initiatives of recent Chinese international thought, both within China as well as internationally. Theorists working on tianxia theory are studying imperial China’s traditional system of foreign relations and claim that the current international order, which is based on competing national states, should be replaced with some kind of world government, inspired by the unique Chinese ’tianxia-worldview’. This article compares the central concepts of the tianxia theory with theories of hegemonic stability. The article argues that although tianxia-theory attempts to present itself as a unique theoretical construct, on a closer evaluation its concepts hold many similarities with the concepts of the three traditions mentioned.
