Abstract
Volunteers and their motives have been studied in many different sport events. However, there is a lack of studies when it comes to disability sport events. The purpose of the study was to investigate the profile and motives of volunteers at European Transplant Sport Week (ETSW) and how these differ by personal characteristics. Data were collected through an online survey. An invite to the survey was sent to 182 volunteers. The completed response rate was 52 % (n=95, 63 % female, 37 % male). The mean age was 49,7 years (SD=16,8). Volunteer motivation was studied based on Special Event Volunteer Motivation Scale (SEVMS) that included 34 items with 5-point Likert-scale. Principal component analysis was conducted to reduce the items to fewer components. Six components were extracted and named career/commitment, solidary, event’s opportunities, purposive, family and alteration/free time. The most important components were purposive and solidary. The results of the study can be used to recruit and to motivate volunteers in similar events especially in disability sport events.
