Abstract

Recent developments in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean have led to a radical reunification of forces within Islamic societies, as well as in countries where the Muslim element predominates. While weight is often given to the geopolitical parameters and effects of the above events, it is appropriate to see them in the light of the influence of endogenous factors. The regions of the Islamic world, which, in the past as well as today, have been the scene of critical political confrontations, social upheavals and military confrontations, have been the focus of considerable reflection on the various manifestations of effective or ineffective governance. The aim of this book is to analyze texts of Islamic political tradition and historiography, which deal with specific forms of "mild" and "strong" power and "successful" and "failed" leadership in medieval Islam.
