Abstract

This article presents three of the most used forms of creative therapies in Finland: art therapy, music therapy and dance movement therapy. It focuses on the use of visual, musical and embodied expression within the therapeutic interaction and relationship. Creative arts therapies have many common aspects and share similar attitudes in relation to art. Artistic expression is embodied language that activates the body and mind beyond, or before verbal expression. It stimulates, enriches and aids therapeutic interaction and the working relationship. Artistic expression and interaction does not exclude verbal language, but it brings to the therapy wider possibilities for recognizing, formulating and observing one's own experiences. Artistic interaction can be the base on which a therapeutic working relationship can be constructed, and artistic expression can enable change. This article is largely based on a recent Finnish publication about embodied aspects in art therapies.
