Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of home-based rehabilitation among older people recently discharged from hospital. Community-dwelling people aged ≥ 60 years recovering from a lower limb or back musculoskeletal injury, surgery, or disorder were randomly assigned into an intervention (n = 59) or a control (standard care, n = 58) group.
The six-month intervention consisted of a motivational interview, a goal attainment process, guidance for safe walking, a progressive exercise program, physical activity counseling, and standard care. The rehabilitation program was not superior to standard care with perceived difficulties in negotiating stairs.
In addition, rehabilitation improved physical performance more than standard care among those with moderate pre-hospital mobility restriction. It is important to evaluate pre-existing mobility and functional abilities during hospitalization and thereafter, as the evaluation may help to tailor adequate rehabilitation strategies for individuals now likely to benefit.
