Tiivistelmä
Today, competitive sport is one of many fields in which the logic of neoliberalism is at work, the product of the deregulation of markets and the economization of social life. Neoliberalism has brought about a number of related transformations, including the privatization and economization of many social domains such as work, education, health care, the family, and the care of the body. Semi-professional or first-division teams (Mestis), marked with skates in the figure, are located in smaller towns but in the same regions as Liiga teams. Since the 1960s, ice hockey has been transformed from a local sport practiced in a limited number of countries into a global industry with over one million registered players in 72 countries. Most ice arenas are multipurpose spaces, built and owned by the local municipality, and sports teams can rent them at relatively low cost. However, running a professional hockey club requires considerable resources.
