Abstract
Increasing numbers of employees working in the care of older people in Finland are seriously considering leaving their jobs. This article examines factors that predict care workers’ leaving intentions. The data consist of NORDCARE survey responses collected from Finnish care workers in 2005 and 2015.The analysis shows that psychophysical workload is by far the most important predictor of intentions to leave. However, shortcomings in the content and management of care work also increase care workers’ intentions to leave. Furthermore, younger workers, those employed by for-profit providers, part-time workers and workers with more than two years’ training for care work are more likely than others to have intentions to leave. Keywords: care work, care for older people, long-term care, leaving intentions, psychophysical overload, management.
