Abstract

This article investigates gendered violence in Finnish feature films directed by Antti J. Jokinen and Aku Louhimies. The examination is concerned with how and what sort of violence is portrayed in the films and what kinds of interpretations on violence as a emerge from the films in relation to cultural frames of reference. The key question is how violence is connected to gender and sexuality in the representations of the films and what kinds of conceptions of gender and sexuality these interfaces facilitate. The perspective used in this article is one of gender-aware cultural studies. The topics and themes emerging from the films are contextualised in relation to feminist culture and research on violence. Examining representations of gendered violence is particularly topical at a time when the #metoo campaign and the inhumane and sexualised practices that some Finnish film directors have subjected their actors to have been a topic of much pub lie discussion.
