Description of the dataset

DescriptionThe data comprises material from the children's Finnish Sign Language (FinSL) Development VIKKE Assessment tool which can be used to assess children's FinSL development in different areas of language development. The VIKKE assessment tool https://viittomatesti.cc.jyu.fi/ is a web-based tool developed by the University of Jyväskylä's VIKKE project. The assessment tool includes five different assessment materials that can be used to evaluate children's Finnish Sign Language skills in different aspects of language abilities, such as receptive and productive vocabulary skills, grammatical skills and narrative skills. The assessment tool also includes a questionnaire for parents to examine the characteristics of their children's linguistic environment.

The data collected through the assessment tool consists of the scores obtained in the different tasks of the assessment tool given to the child, such as the answers produced, as well as the narratives produced on video. Thus, the data is both numerical and video-based. In addition, the data consists of the answers to questionnaires addressed to parents on the children's early language development and characteristics of the linguistic environment. The data has been collected from signing families living in different parts of Finland with children between the ages of 0;8-15;0. In total, the data consists of data collected from 200 children. The aim of the study is to examine children's Finnish Sign Language development in different areas of language proficiency and their interconnections and relationships.
