Access keys

The research portal supports the usage of access keys for an easy access to special parts of the page. To use these access keys a special key combination is used, which is depending on the browser used:

  • Internet Explorer: Use the ALT key followed by the access key to focus on the target element. Press ENTER to activate or click the target element.
  • Chrome: Use the ALT key followed by the access key to focus on the target element. If the target element can be activated or clicked this will be done automatically.
  • Firefox: Use the ALTSHIFT key followed by the access key to focus on the target element. If the target element can be activated or clicked this will be done automatically.
  • For other browsers please refer to the manual of this browser to find how access keys can be used.

The following access keys can be used in the research portal (for simplification only the format for Internet Explorer and Chrome is shown, modify the key sequence as needed):

  • ALT0: Opens the startpage.
  • ALT1: Jumps to the navigation.
  • ALT2: Jumps to the content section.
  • ALT5: Jumps to the search.

Limitations and alternatives

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility of Converis Portal, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations, and potential solutions.

Known limitations for Converis Portal:

  1. Detail Page - Attribute language: Attributes in the detail page might be marked with the wrong language in html code, because Converis marks the attributes of the page according to the language selected by the user. The system has no control over the language that the values are entered in. We are in the process of removing the language tags where they are not helpful, or may indicate the wrong language.
  2. Page navigation: The high-level html structure is misleading and does not give the user a good overview of the page via screenreader tools. The title elements of the page are ordered in a way that does not take accessibility into account. We are in the process of changing the high level html structure to reflect the logical structure of the page.
  3. Search forms: Not all search elements are highlighted when focused or marked clearly as form buttons. This will be taken into account as part of feedback to the vendor.

Assessment approach

Clarivate and JYU assessed the accessibility of Converis Portal by the following approaches:

  • Self-evaluation
  • Collaboration with external accessibility experts (mindscreen GmbH, Munich, Germany)
