Abstract

In this thesis the performance of the new gas-filled recoil separator (RITU) installed at the JYFL Accelerator laboratory is studied. Concepts such as transmission and beam suppression are important properties which have been determined using asymmetric fusion evaporation reactions. In addition, very neutron deficient alpha active thorium, actinium and radium isotopes including seven new isotopes (²¹⁰Th, ²¹¹Th, ²⁰⁷Ac, ²⁰⁸Ac, ²⁰⁴Ra, ²⁰³Ra and 202Ra) are studied in this thesis. Altogheter nine alpha transitions were assigned to these new isotopes. The reactions used in these studies were ⁴⁰Ar + ¹⁸¹Ta, ³⁵Cl + ¹⁸¹Ta, ⁴⁰Ar + ¹⁷⁵Lu, ³⁵Cl + ¹⁷⁵Lu and ³⁶ʼ⁴⁰Ar + ¹⁷⁰ʼ¹⁷¹Yb. Production rate studies using the above mentioned reactions are also included in this work.
