Katja Mäkinen


General description

I have a Title of Docent in political science, PhD in political science and MA in art education. Currently I am JYU's consortium PI in a research project dArts (dialoguing@rts – Advancing Cultural Literacy for Social Inclusion through Dialogical Arts Education) funded by the HorizonEurope Programme. Previously I have worked in several multidisciplinary research projects funded by the Academy of Finland, Kone Foundation, European Research Council and HorizonEurope. I was a visiting fellow in the University of Bologna (2021), European University Institute in Florence (2018) and the University of Auckland, New Zealand (2012-13, 2015-16). I have acted as a member and a convener in the steering committee of the Citizenship standing group in the European Consortium of Political Research and as a member and a vice-chair in the board of the Society for Cultural Studies in Finland. I was editor in chief in the Politiikka journal (2021-22) and am currently member of the editorial staff of the journal Kulttuurintutkimus. I am a local leader of the Experiencing Europe Lab in a research alliance fostering transnational higher education and mobility (FORTHEM), funded by the European Universities Initiative under the Erasmus+ programme. I have worked as a lecturer in cultural policy and political science and I teach also in museology and the MA programme of Cultural Environment Studies. I conduct conceptual and ethnographic research on participatory governance and EU policies on citizenship, culture and education. My research focuses on citizenship, participation, identities, cultural heritage and performing arts. My research interests include temporality and spatiality as well as the social impact of cultural institutions and arts-based practices.
