Summary

An enormous number of different disposable products are used daily in healthcare, such as
protective caps, surgical drapes, work clothes, as well as respirators and surgical mouth-nose
protectors. At the moment, almost all of them have been made of synthetic and fossil-based raw
materials. The BioProt – “Development of bio-based and antimicrobial materials and use as
protective equipment” -project develops new, sustainable and safe material solutions for infection
control in healthcare focusing mainly on respirators and surgical masks. Reusable masks will be
also developed for industrial use. Organic virus-killing components attached on the surface
improve the material properties, which gives a competitive advantage over the other products on
the market. On the case-by-case basis, results will be also applied to the other solutions. Mask
users’ well-being and safety are the key factors in the development work including various user

surveys and developing testing methods for materials. New digital technology is also applied to
monitor product performance and user friendliness online. The project is expected to improve the
self-sufficiency of products and materials in Europe. Through the bio-based raw materials,
production is not anymore linked to the availability of fossil-based raw materials.
