Summary
Actions to mitigate the climate change would require rapid transformation of critical value chains in transportation and producing industry, and will take place via development and implementation of sustainable fossil-free technologies. Furthermore, traditional sectors of fossil industries need to decarbonise their operations including oil refining industry. CCU/CCS as well as green hydrogen are important tools in these efforts. Sustainable, low carbon paths to transportation fuels and chemicals are also needed to reach the targets of climate change mitigation. Aviation is probably the transport sector most difficult to electrify, Therefore, liquid fuels are still needed for aviation for foreseeable future.
SynJet project will aim at developing catalytic pathways from syngas to jet fuels (isosynthesis and fatty alcohols synthesis from syngas) trough important platform intermediates isobutylene and fatty alcohols. These intermediates can be converted with high selectivity to jet fuels. Moreover, they can be utilized to other chemical products such as rubber, cosmetics and hygiene products. More efficient catalysts will be developed for these routes supported by computational chemistry approach. Proof-of-concept will be performed for both routes in laboratory scale and optimized process concept will be developed by modelling and simulations at least for one of the concepts. Techno-economics as well as further development and business opportunities after the project will be evaluated. The research project will be carried out by three research partners: VTT, University of Jyväskylä and Åbo Akademi.
The project will establish a consortium with strong industrial representation throughout the value chain. Consortium companies are SMEs: Kanteleen voima, Kleener ja P2X Solutions and large companies: Berner, Helen, Neste, Nokian Renkaat ja Sumitomo.
