Summary

My dissertation project deals with the struggle between the conflicting ideologies of real estate development and heritage conservation in urban planning in Finnish growth centers. In my research, I study collaboration and communication between agents representing these fields of expertice in two recent development projects. My primary data consists of documents naturally occurring in the local detailed planning processes of the projects. In analysis, I apply multiple, mostly qualitative, methods, according to each sub-question. The objective is to deepen our understanding of the agents involved in urban planning today, and to create tools for more balanced collaboration. My research serves the development of planning and takes part in the discussion on the ongoing total renewal of the Land Use and Building Act.
