Tiivistelmä

The broad context to the project relates to the increased digitisation of schools as reflected in the greater availability and use of smart devices such as tablets pcs. To support the meaningful adoption of these devices, and to best capitalise on the educational enhancements which they can support requires teachers who are competent in the creation of digital content which is tailored to the particular needs of their own learners, and which is informed and underpinned by an understanding of the academic and digital competencies related to digital content creation. In the absence of this, the mainstream use of tablet devices is likely to be influenced by academic publishers who create generic resources and where traditional hard copy formats are replaced by their digital equivalents. The recent pivot to online and remote teaching due to the covid pandemic has changed how digital learning is perceived within schools with an enhanced appreciation of the role which teachers play in the provision of accessible digital learning and content for their students. Teachers are now assuming roles as content creators but the competencies which underpin this aspect to their role and the related creation process have been under addressed to-date. The academic and digital competencies related to digital content creation include aspects related to copyright, legal and ethical dimensions, fair use and re-use of content, use in differentiated instruction as well as the digital literacies to enable content creation. Johnston & McGarr (2021) detail how the accessibility of digital content and pedagogy is a consideration to the inclusion aspect of digital education: specifically, how principles of multimodality and universal design can inform and scaffold approaches to teaching and learning in the digital sphere.
In parallel to this teacher digital content creation is identified and reflected as a current priority at a European level and there is recognition across the academic and policy literature of its significance in the broad context of digital transformation. For example, teacher digital competence in respect of digital resources (encompassing the selection and adaption of digital resources) is reflected in strand 2 of DigCompEdu. More broadly, digital education content and the creation of a related EU framework is the focus of Action 3 of the Digital Education Action Plan 2021-27. This proposed project will run in parallel with the creation of this framework. Overall, there is significant alignment between the focus of this proposed project and current policy and practice priorities at the EU level. It will provide concrete outcomes and resources which will support and enable teachers to develop their own digital content and to use this in pedagogically meaningful ways in their professional practice.
