Summary

This project investigates the influence of data and new technologies on creating competitive advantages and
international growth via transformation of business models and leadership practices. Thus, the project
combines LSR 2022 focus areas of data economy, business renewal and leadership competence. Moreover,
the project is connected with JYU’s (University of Jyväskylä) strategic focus area of information technology
and the human in knowledge society and JSBE’s (Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics)
focus area of digital business and economy.

Our project is motivated by the notion that the future of Finnish economy and welfare is largely dependent on
the firms’ adaptiveness to changes in the marketplace by renewing and transforming their business models to
sustain competitive advantages and gain international growth. One key development in the marketplace
concerns the exploding amount and availability of data, and arguably, few Finnish companies have managed
to capitalize on the new business opportunities that the data provide. Consequently, this project aims at
producing actionable insights, best practices and route maps for companies who are aiming at leveraging
data and digitalizing their business models and processes. A particular emphasis is on the leadership
practices that foster the transition to renewed business models and processes. The results will be highly
meaningful for companies and leaders across industries that are renewing their businesses to create
competitive advantages with data and technologies. Simultaneously, we contribute to the numerous calls for
more research on turning data into value in the fields of strategic management and information systems and
marketing.

Project’s cost estimate is 170.000€ which covers one full-time post-doctoral researcher and part-time doctoral
student positions, research visits with international collaborators, travelling costs and data collection and
analysis costs. Senior researchers participate in the project with funds provided by the University of
Jyväskylä.
