Summary
The goal of the KIP Competence Center project is to create new competence in the Kokkola
region and strengthen the existing research innovation environment and thus increase the
number of research-oriented experts to strengthen the region's business activities. The goal
is to create a common research innovation environment for companies and the university,
which promotes the birth of new spin-off companies, strengthens current R&D activities at
the business-university interface, and promotes the attractiveness, competitiveness, and
employment of the region. In the project, a needs and implementation report will be prepared
for the Competence Center and a common operating model will be created. The results of the
project will be published as a preliminary report.
The KIP Competence Center strengthens the KIP region as an attractive industrial park and,
on the other hand, promotes the development of the KIP Competence Center as an innovation
environment where new innovations based on scientific research are born, renewing the area's
current business activities and creating new business activities and new and renewing jobs.
Solutions like the KIP Competence Center do not exist elsewhere in Finland, but there are
several centers of expertise operating at the university-business interface around the world,
whose operating models and effectiveness are also benchmarked in the project. The goal of the
KIP Competence Center is also to contribute to promoting the marketing of the region, and to be
a calling card promoting the recognition and attractiveness of the region from the perspective of
research in the directions of various stakeholders.
