Tiivistelmä
In recent decades, professional practices have become more common in all levels of Finnish sport, from top-level organisations to grassroots clubs. The top-level sports are following international trends, although professionalisation has emerged in Finland rather late due to the country’s strong focus on Olympic and individual sports. Yet there is still no understanding of how national top-level sports and their organisational dynamics have changed in recent years. In grassroots sports, clubs face pressure to shift from being mutual benefit organisations towards more professional, service delivery organisations. In Finland, professionalisation has spread, with a rapidly growing amount of professionals and clubs aiming for “professionalism” (Koski & Mäenpää 2018). Despite this growth, there remains a lack of knowledge regarding what kinds of practices are related to professionalisation. The aim of this study is to respond to these shortcomings and analyse the professionalisation of team sports in Finland.
The theoretical framework of the study follows the levels of professionalisation presented by Dowling et al. (2014) and focuses on professionalisation at the organisational and systemic levels. On the organisational level we will focus on grassroots sports clubs and on the systemic level we will investigate primarily the field of top-level sports. Giddens’ theory of structuration (1984) is utilised as the theoretical basis for the study. We are therefore interested in the interplay between the field, its systems and organisations and the actors in those organisations. The study investigates both the structures of professionalisation and peoples’ perspectives on it.
The study is conducted as a multiple case study, in which one case represents one specific team sport. The studied case sports are ice hockey, basketball, Finnish baseball and floorball. Several data sets will be collected for each case, mainly through interviews and documents. In addition, a questionnaire is conducted among actors on sports club development.
The study will open and structure discussions and understanding related to professionalisation. It will offer tools for organisations to adapt to changes related to professionalisation and analyse it critically. In the field of research, the study aims to clarify the concept of professionalisation and elements related to it. The study also highlights the Nordic and Finnish context in professionalisation and subsequently takes steps towards further comparative research.
